Most of the time, there are no issues at all with wearing religious clothes. College authorities and teachers allow wearing religious attire. There are no strict restrictions on wearing religious clothes. The 1st Amendment of the Constitution prohibits the government from interfering with the individual and corporate practice of religion. However, for government IDs or college IDs, a picture with an uncovered face is required. Sometimes, especially during exams, there are restrictions, and you cannot enter the exam room with your face covered. Religious clothes that cover someone’s identity are restricted in such situations. It’s important to note that not everyone who wears religious clothes is necessarily a good person; some bad people capitalize on religion to do immoral things while wearing religious attire.
My Experience Wearing Religious Clothes in a U.S. College
I am Hindu, and my religion is Sanatan. Every religion has some specific religious clothes, and we also have some traditional attire. Hindu men frequently wear white cotton dhotis, and women wear a long scarf or robe (sari). When I went to college wearing a dhoti, most of my classmates looked at me, and some people asked with curiosity and interest about what I was wearing. There were no issues at all while wearing religious dresses in a U.S. college.
What If You Are from Another Religion?
If you are from another religion, such as Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, or Jewish, don’t worry. Some of my Muslim male friends used to come to college wearing a Thobe (also known as a jubba or dishdasha). Female friends wore their Abaya (Burkha) with a hijab, and some of them wore Western clothes with a hijab. There are no issues at all with wearing religious clothes.
Things to Remember About Dressing for College
Though college is a place where a person goes for education and to learn something new, religious clothes are more suitable for religious places like Temples, Mosques, and Churches. In reality, most U.S. college students from every religious community dress normally. Males typically wear T-shirts, jeans, jackets, etc., while females wear V-neck tops, skinny jeans, T-shirts, short shorts, miniskirts, etc. This does not mean you cannot or should not wear what you feel like wearing. You have complete freedom over what you want to wear and how you want to wear it. You should not let others decide or tell you what your clothing should be when it comes to religious attire. Wear what you feel comfortable in.
Conclusion
Every country has its own fashion. If you are going to visit or study in a country, you will have a good experience if you dress like the locals; you will feel much more comfortable. Again, there are no issues in the U.S. with dress and fashion styles. You have the freedom to choose your own dress code and fashion.
